TOLL BOOTH CHRISTMAS

For three weeks, West has dreamt about a woman he thinks could be his Spark—who could reignite his passions and dreams.  Several more weeks pass, and his hopes dwindle; he has to accept she is nothing more than a dream. Another uneventful night comes and goes; he prepares to leave. He peers from his booth, checking for vehicles in his lane. A silver BMW pulls up in lane two. West watches intently; the window slides down almost in slow motion. He looks closer; he blinks several times; his heartbeat quickens. It even skips a beat. It can't be; he stares, it's impossible, yet there she is. In the flesh, bold and beautiful – the very women he hoped and prayed existed.

The very woman he spent sleepless nights about, the one to pull him from the depths of despair. He's frozen in time for a moment, but his heart tells him to move closer to her. He boldly pushes the booth door open. He steps into the lane with a single purpose: to get to her. But his tunnel vision impairs him. The blare of the car horns snaps him back to reality, forcing him to retreat. The traffic is thick and intense. He can do nothing but fixate on the car as it drives away. He even thought of screaming over the sound of the traffic, telling her to stop and wait. He knew he would be speechless if she stopped, gazing into her mesmerizing eyes. He stood motionless with a bittersweet smile until her car disappeared into the horizon. Embracing a renewed sense of hope, the woman he once dreamt about is no longer a dream. A real person he can touch, hold, and possibly, one day, share an intimate kiss with. He moves with purpose, vigor, and enthusiasm for the first time in a long time.
